Every year, to mark Sant Jordi's Day, Platja d'Aro hosts the Lace-Makers' Gathering, which this year celebrates its 18th edition. Bobbin lace is a textile art form that involves creating fine, intricate patterns using a cardboard template, thread, bobbins, needles and a cushion. The earliest examples of handcrafted lace can be traced back to Venice, and the craft quickly spread throughout Europe, with Flanders, France and Belgium being the most influential regions. In Catalonia, bobbin lace work flourished and became a trade thanks to the booming textile industry, but with the decline of this industry, the technique of making lace, edgings, handkerchiefs and lace in general remains in the hands of the lace-makers, who continue to produce them for their own enjoyment and to share this traditional art with anyone wishing to learn it, thereby keeping this tradition alive.
