In 1916, Josep Ensesa i Pujadas, a flour industrialist based in Girona, exchanged the debt of a baker from Sant Feliu de Guíxols for a plot of land at the foot of a barren, rocky hill.

In 1923, Josep Ensesa i Gubert fulfilled his father's promise to give a plot of land to the first son who wanted to build on it. This is how the emblematic Senya Blanca (1924), the first building in S'Agaró, came into being.

The architect Rafel Masó, a man of great artistic sensitivity, enthusiastically took on Mr Ensesa's ambitious project to build a garden city, to make S'Agaró a small Catalan village integrated into its surroundings.

At the same time, new buildings were constructed: the Sant Pol baths, the Monumental hotel, the Hostal de La Gavina (...) and S'Agaró became a meeting point for artists and men of letters, theatre and cinema.

S'Agaró has been a very cinematic setting, where notable films have been shot, such as: Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1950) with Ava Gardner and Mario Cabré, Mr Arkadin (1954) directed by Orson Welles (....) and The Sea Inside (2004) starring Javier Bardem and directed by Alejandro Amenábar, which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, among many others.

S'Agaró has been declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
